It is being developed by a small team of the University of Vienna (Institute for Prehistory and Historical Archaeology) and the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Institute for Medieval Research) and various freelance contributors.

OpenAtlas is built entirely with open-source tools and released under the GNU General Public Licence. It uses cutting edge technology like Apache, PHP, JavaScript, Zend Framework, Leaflet, PostgreSQL and PostGIS.

OpenAtlas' data model is based on classes and properties of the CIDOC-CRM which is an internationally established standard for cultural heritage documentation.
